The Mongollon Mountain Wolf is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf which is currently endangered. It is native to Arizona and New Mexico. Taxonomist Ronald Nowak reclassified the Mongollon Mountain Wolf concluding that it was not a separate subspecies of the Gray Wolf but a variety of the subspecies Canis lupus nubilus (the Great Plains Wolf.) Biologists Bogan and Mehlhop disagree, believing that the Mongollon Mountain Wolf is a variety of Canis lupus baileyi (the Mexican Wolf.) The Mongollon Mountain Wolf is described as being darker than northern wolves with a high, arched frontal bone. It is thought to be have gone extinct around 1935.
